Hello World! I want to first start of by saying that this blog is a labor of love because this is something that I have been wanting to share for some time. I have been singing professionally and teaching for the past 18 years and I have learned some things along the way that have helped me to cope with the stresses of singing and demands that are required. I want to share them with you!
I believe in a holistic and natural approach to wellness. However, this did not come ‘naturally’ to me, ironically. My quest for more natural approaches to wellness was borne out of a frustration that I was doing what medical doctors were telling me to do but I still had the same problems crop up again and again.
One example I will share is from when I was in grad school. I was studying with a voice teacher who believed that each time one of her students came down with a cold that the necessary action would be to immediately send him or her to a specialist (otolaryngologist or ENT physician). I had just moved to the East Coast from the West Coast of the United States and I didn’t realize at the time that I had major allergy issues. I was getting sick constantly and my voice was so hoarse I was unable to sing. You can imagine, I logged in a lot of hours at my ENT’s office.
Each time I went, I was given another prescription for antibiotics. Now, I’m no doctor, but from what I know about colds, etc., they are not cured by antibiotics. Antibiotics treat bacterial infections but not viral infections. I went on every series of antibiotics you can think of but my symptoms kept coming back. This was just one example that started me thinking that there has got to be another way to take care of yourself that doesn’t require taking a pill or even more invasive techniques.
So, that brings us to today. I will cover a range of topics but if you are interested in something in particular related to health, music or singing, send me a message and I’ll do my best to cover it!
Here’s to living well and being happy!
